western spring beauty

In the week after the spring equinox I did a nature hike up the Adams River from the Wade Road trailhead in Tsutswecw Park.    The single track trail route wound through the burned forest to the Gorge.    I hiked over the bluffs, then returned on a double track through the black forest to the start, a 5 km … Continue reading →

Wildflower Journal Posted on 2026-03-28 by D. Smith2026-03-24
Geum triflorum

In the first days of spring, there were very few wildflowers in bloom in the grasslands, but there was lots of emerging green growth.    On a nature hike through the middle Lac du Bois grasslands, there was still a bit of mud, but there were swans and ducks on the ponds and lakes, blackbirds on the marshy pothole ponds, … Continue reading →

We camped, hiked, kayaked, and explored New Zealand for a month.  We completed two of the Great Treks and we visited a number of remote spots.    We liked NZ a lot and we hope to return.    There were many photos taken, and only a few are shared here, mostly of plants spotted while hiking the trails. Shared here … Continue reading →

We hiked trails on the Pender Islands in April.    One of the trails we did was on the South Island, up Mt. We hiked trails in the arid scablands of Central Washington in spring.   For two weeks, we hiked a different trail each day and camped in several Washington State Parks.    There were a variety of habitats varying from grasslands to desert-like terrain, open steppes, wetlands, and open forests.    We saw many wildflowers along the way and a few are … Continue reading →

fireweed

I backpacked Grand Canyon, hiking from the South Rim (8000 ft elevation) down trails to the river and then traversing the benchlands, doing a loop route over 4 days.    Afterward I also did some day hikes down and back up.   It was April and there was a bit of snow up on the South Rim, but 5000 feet below, … Continue reading →
