On the Trails in New Zealand

Wildflower Journal Posted on 2026-03-13 by D. Smith2026-02-19

We camped, hiked, kayaked, and explored New Zealand for a month.  We completed two of the Great Treks and we visited a number of remote spots.    We liked NZ a lot and we hope to return.    There were many photos taken, and only a few are shared here, mostly of plants spotted while hiking the trails.

Shared here are Coastal bush lupine (Lupinus arboreus), Mt. Taranaki buttercup (Ranunculus nivicola), New Zealand foxglove (Ourisia vulcanaria), New Zealand cabbage tree (Cordyline australis), hound’s-tongue fern (Microsorum pustulatum), sun orchid (Thelymitra sp.), climbing clubmoss (Lycopoidum volubile), sea fig (Carpobrotus chilensis), New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax), a weta (Deinacrida sp.), and large-leaved lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus).

Locations are noted in the album.   Two of the images are from the lower slopes of Mt. Doom (Mt. Taranaki) on the North Tongariro Circuit (trek) and several are from the Abel Tasman Trail (trek).

All photos by the author.    The album (with captions/IDs) can be seen at this link –  On the Trails in New Zealand (1)

The album is also shared here as a slideshow (no captions):

There will be more wildflowers of New Zealand in future posts…

Shared here are … Continue reading →
