Rattlesnake Plantain

Wildflower Journal Posted on 2025-11-13 by D. Smith2025-11-14

Western Rattlesnake Plantain (Goodyera oblongifolia) is an evergreen perennial in the orchid family which can be spotted in our mid-elevation forests of the Southern Interior.   From thick roots and spreading rhizomes Goodyera often spreads, forming small colonies.    A basal cluster of dark green leaves are oval – lanceolate and have a whitish streak down the middle.  Stiff stems rise up to 30 cm.   Small white irregularly-spaced orchid flowers form in summer.

After flowering brownish capsules form.    The common name comes from the texture and pattern on the leaves, resembling snakeskin.
