Wildflower Journal Posted on 2025-06-03 by D. Smith2025-08-09

On a sunny and windy morning I drove to the upper edge of Aberdeen and hiked up a series of tracks to the top of Coal Hill.   there were wide views from the top to enjoy.    on the way back down I looped around the hill, traversing grassland slopes back to the start.    Along the way I stopped … Continue reading →

Skyline Park Nature Hike

Wildflower Journal Posted on 2025-05-28 by D. Smith2025-10-18

On a mid-May day I did a shorter hike on the trails in Aberdeen Hills Highland Park.    There were many wildflowers in bloom and many on the way.    Death camas was prolific and lupines were emerging;  I also spotted upland larkspur, various types of pussytoes, yarrow, catchfly, mustard, saskatoon, and others. Included here are a few images from … Continue reading →

Juniper Ridge Park Nature Hike

Wildflower Journal Posted on 2025-05-26 by D. Smith2025-10-18

On a mid-May morning I hiked along Scott Road (unsigned) from Rose Hill Road along a grassland route on a sloping bench above Juniper Ridge.    This is the soon-to-be Juniper Ridge Park (or Protected Area) recently acquired by the BC Parks Foundation.    The main route is a dirt double track which can be hiked to the east for … Continue reading →

shrubby penstemon

We drove to the North Okanogan and along backroads into the hills to hike the Rose – Swanson Trails above and to the west of Armstrong.     The trails on the north side of the hill had less flowering plants and only a few species.    The open slopes on the south side had more wildflowers and flowering shrubs to … Continue reading →

Meadow Death Camas

Wildflower Journal Posted on 2025-05-16 by D. Smith2025-10-19

Meadow death camas (Toxicoscordion venenosum) is a perennial that grows from a scaly bulb, similar to an onion. In early spring, the first basal leaves appear, usually in open spots. The leaves are narrow and linear with a V-shape, with a “keel.” The inflorescence has short floral stalks with many star-like white-yellowish flowers rising to a peak. The flowers have an … Continue reading →

Neskonlith Meadows to Aylmer Lake Nature Hike

Wildflower Journal Posted on 2025-05-07 by D. Smith2025-10-28

The premier wildflower hike of spring in our area is the route through Neskonlith Meadows up toward Aylmer Lake.     We hiked to the lake and back (10.7 km), but this was a leisurely nature hike, a time to enjoy the wildflowers, the other flora, and the fauna.   We stopped at the Adams Lake Band Office to get a permit, … Continue reading →

red-flowering currant

We traveled southwest to Lytton, then crossed the Fraser River on the reaction ferry to the West Side Road.  We continued north, then west into Stein Valley Nlaka’pamux Heritage Park.   We hiked up the Stein River Trail, spending about 3.5 hours on the trail for an out-and-back hike, and some exploration time in the valley.    The day was sunny … Continue reading →

Shooting Stars

Wildflower Journal Posted on 2025-04-25 by D. Smith2025-10-28

Few-flowered shooting stars (Dodecatheon pulchellum sp. now Dodacatheon pauciflora) are native perennial wildflowers in the primrose family (Primulaceae) that bloom in April and May in our area.    From fibrous root stocks, leafless stems grow up to 40 cm.    A rosette of mostly glabrous lanceolate leaves taper off below the inflorescence. The purple to lavender flowers are complex, but … Continue reading →

Barnes Lake Trails Nature Hike

Wildflower Journal Posted on 2025-04-22 by D. Smith2025-10-28

On a sunny mid-April day we hiked the Barnes Lake horse-and-hiker-trails (9.25 km) through sagebrush grasslands and open douglas fir forest.    This was a group hike so there was little time to stop and examine various wildflowers along the way, but I took some photos and they are shared here. Saskatoons (Amelanchier alnifolia) were just starting to bloom at … Continue reading →

Neskonlith Meadows Nature Walk

Wildflower Journal Posted on 2025-04-17 by D. Smith2025-10-28

After paddling Little Shuswap Lake, I drove up the road to Neskonlith Lake and stopped to enjoy the wildflowers by the roadside.    To hike the meadows, we need to get a permit from the Band Office, and this is planned for later this month.   This last visit was really a scouting trip (a walk by the road) to see … Continue reading →
