Full-Time Gardening
From mid-March to mid-November, the pattern each day is usually the same:
- Hike, paddle, run, tennis, etc. in the morning (once each day).
- Work in the garden in the afternoon.
The first weeks of gardening have been busy, but sometimes limited by the weather:
- Cleaning up garden beds (ongoing).
- Pruning fruit trees and shrubs.
- Cutting back stems from last year’s perennials.
- Recycling compostable materials each week.
- Installing wildlife fences to keep out the deer (ongoing).
- Trench composting.
- Landscaping project – a raised garden bed (using blocks).
- Landscaping project – a rockery bed.
- Landscaping project – walkways.
- Transplanting and potting perennials for later transplants.
- Seeding stratified seed (blue-eyed grass, hellebore, echinacea, rudbeckia) into flats in the greenhouse.
- Turning over the large compost heap and trenching where possible.
- Dividing some shrubs and perennials – divisions to pots for now.
