Oct. 22 – Custer Lake Nature Hike

After a week of fighting a cold I got out for some garden work, but finally fit in a good 9.2 km hike in the backcountry east of Lac le Jeune.    There were the usual fall seedheads and fading plants, but  came across a cluster of Pinedrops too!

A cold has limited my time on the trails so I have been doing chores at home: sprinkler blowout fencepost repairs irrigation line expansion (for the spring) collecting and composting frost-damaged plants harvesting – potatoes, tomatoes, lifting bulbs (dahlias, etc.) collecting fallen leaves and spreading around perennials and shrubs (cold protection) general cleanup before winter and more…

Oct. 14 – 15 – Fall Gardening

Frost took out a number of plants so I spent a number of hours pulling out tomatoes, cosmos, nasturtium, cucumber, squash, dahlias, and others, chopped them up and moved them to the compost heap. Removed dahlia bulbs for winter storage, and buried some potted plants for overwintering.
