Three August Hikes
Most wildflowers in the Interior valleys withered and went to seed in the hot summer this year. We continued to hike the hills and saw a few wildflowers in sheltered locations.
We drove to the top of Mt. Savona and spotted matte saxifrage (Saxifraga bronchialis), goldenrod (Solidago canadensis), fireweed (Epilobeum angustifolium), jacob’s ladder (Polemonium elgans), and hawksbeard (Crepis sp).
We hiked the burned forests near Logan Lake and in the middle grasslands of Lac du Bois and spotted white prairie aster (Aster ericoides sp.), silverleaf phacelia (Phacelia hastata) agoseris (Agoseris glauca), mustard (Sisymbrium sp.), and fleabane (Erigeron sp.).
We also spotted a number of weedy summer flowering plants, but did not photograph them. As the weather cools, we will see a few late-blooming varieties.
