I hauled my kayak down to the river to paddle on Kamloops Lake. There were a few flowering plants on the flat areas above the river. There was a large patch of sneezeweed (helenium autumnale) in bloom.
Sneezeweed is a perennial that flowers in late summer. Each plant can produce a large number of flowerheads. The leaves are sometimes used in snuff, which sometimes results in a sneeze. It is also used as a cultivar in gardens (we use it on a steep hillside).
Growing in the tall grasses was western false dragonhead (Physostegia parviflora).
Opposite leaves and opposite flowers on a stem which climbs to about 2/3rds of a meter from rhizomes.
And, abundant everywhere are asters and daisies in many forms and locations.
They have a wide variety of habitats and forms, sometimes hard to distinguish. A few are immediately recognizable, but learning all the many types is a long-term study.
On the lake were pelicans, feeding at the mouth of the Tranquille River where it flows into Kamloops Lake.
