Salt Spring Before Spring
We stayed on Salt Spring Island in early March and hiked, walked, paddled and explored natural areas. We enjoyed the arbutus trees along the shoreline.
In this wet environment, there are many fungi on decaying wood, like this Stereum (?).
We also some some jelly spot fungi? (Dacrymyces stillatus) on fallen logs.
We have spotted blue-eyed Mary (Collinsia parviflora) on moist ground on the Gulf Islands in early spring before. They are an annual with small flowers.
When we hike along the rocky shorelines on the Gulf Islands, we often spot stonecrop (Sedum spathulifolium) growing in rock crevices above the Gulf waters. In this moderate climate, some of the sedums retain their green tones through the winter.
Mosses and lichens cover boulders and outcrops wherever there is less exposure to the sun.
And, on the beaches are colorful seaweeds at low tide.
We will be returning to the Gulf Island in shoulder season for more exploration of trails, seasshore routes, and nature’s offerings soon.
