On the Northeast Greenstone Mountain Slopes
The north slopes of Greenstone Mountain were burned in 1998. Most of the blackened trees were removed or have fallen so that there are now open green slopes. Ponderosa pines are growing on the lower slopes and fir and pine are growing higher on the mountain, but the north slopes are steep and rocky without any taller trees. Shrubs and woody perennials have grown up, including wild raspberries, snowberries, wild roses, dogbane, and birch-leaved spirea.
Pinegrasses are now abundant in the open forests and many wildflowers bloom in succession. Some of the weedy ones include salsify, hawksbeard, mullein, and peavine, but we also spotted paintbrush, gaillardia, lupines, and arnica too.
At higher elevations there are forests that were not burned, but have been logged and replanted. Upcoming hikes will venture into those areas this summer.
