On the East Trophy Alpine Ridges
We drove east on the Spahats Creek Road, then we hiked up into the East trophy Range, completing a loop in the alpine areas. the main wildflower bloom was over but we spotted a photographed a few examples which are shared here.
Western pasqueflower had long-since bloomed, and now the head had rotated and the seed was maturing.
In the rocky upper areas above the treeline, alpine pussytoes (antennaria alpina) forms low-growing mats on the rocky and gravelly slopes. The flowerheads also turn (down) and the seeds develop to the point of dispersal.
In the drainage and seep areas, various types of saxifrage were abundant. Fleshy colorful rosettes of prickly saxifrage (saxifraga tricuspidata) had a tropical look.
Leatherleaf saxifrage (leptarrhena pyrolifolia) could be spotted in seep zones.
White mountain heather (cassiope mertensiana) was still in bloom above the treeline. Small white bells grow from the branch tips and axils.
On wet slopes partridge foot (luetkea pectinata) grew in clusters (it’s a shrub) with some still in flower.
And, as always, fleabane graced the slopes at various elevations.
