On Buse Hill in Summer
We hiked up Buse Hill and enjoyed the views. Along the way were a number of wildflowers, a few of which are shared here.
Sticky geranium (viscosissimum) added a splash of purple along the trailside.
The lower slopes are upper grasslands leading up to an open douglas fir forest and buckwheat (eriogonum heracleoides) flowered on the upper side of the trail in open areas.
On disturbed sites, mullein was established, towering over the other competition.
Foxtail barley was also filling in roadside areas.
We spotted Okanogan fameflower on top of the hill, most of which was in bud, but not in full bloom. We transplanted one plant and it bloomed later that day.
We hiked back down and not far down the road was a meadow with sainfoin (onobrychis viciifolia) in bloom. Other common names are saintfoin and holy clover. We spotted the same plant variety a week later in the Marble Range.
In the summer, the grasslands starts to be overrun with tall grasses, sweet clover, and alfalfa, but the upper grasslands of Buse Hill was still green and bountiful in July.
