Okanogan Fameflower (in Flower)
Okanogan Fameflower (talinum sediforme T. okanoganense) blooms near the first week of June. We have encountered it on top of Red Plateau, on top of Mara Mountain, on the western rim of Opax Mountain, on rocky hilltops on the south-facing slopes of lower Lac du Bois Grasslands Provincial Park and probably other places, but it is small and low-growing perennial which is easy to miss. We try to hike to spots where it is in bloom.
It is a fleshy perennial with a thick taproot and many stems. The flower are mostly white, but bloom for only short periods of time on sunny days.
We have successfully transplanted it into our sunny rock gardens. We have 3 thriving specimens from which we will start new plants from cuttings.
In spots where it is growing in the wild, they can be found in large numbers, but you have to get the timing right to witness the tiny flowers.
