Working on Close-Ups
I am trying to get close-ups of wildflowers in bloom, maintaining exposure and sharpness, but it;s not easy. I very the focal length depending on the light and the complexity of the subject. Some are easier like this arnica which has flat plane for focus:
Others are more complex so maintaining depth of field is important as with this image of coltsfoot:
Choosing the right angle to highlight the flower and blur/darken the background requires careful consideration as shown in this image of a a fairyslipper:
All of these were done without a full-frame camera, nor a macro lens, nor a tripod. A quick duck to get an image while hiking is the standard, but quick evaluation of the light, focal length and focusing technique comes with experience. Having a steady hand is not easy when hiking in steep terrain.
I get out lots and there are many duds, but a few good ones too, a long-term process of collecting good images.
