Mid-May, In the Garden
On most days in spring, summer, and fall we walk through the gardens, enjoying the perennials, annuals, ferns, herbs, vegetables, fruit trees, and shrubs as they go through the cycle of greening up, developing, blossoming, and fruiting. We take some photos, then we process the images and save them to a cloud drive, which can be shared to social media and to this website.
On this mid-May spring day we saw many plants to admire and a few are shared here. In the gallery are:
- hostas (Hosta plantaginea)
- solomon’s seal (Polygonatum multiflorum)
- ajuga (Ajuga reptans)
- thrift (Armeria sp.)
- coral bells (Heuchera sanguinea)
- scarlet geum (Geum coccineum)
- moss phlox (Phlox subulata)
- iris (Iris pallida)
- saxifrage (Saxifraga sp.)
- haskap (Lonerica caerulea)
- flax (Linum perenne)
- prostate broom (Genista sp.)
- candytuft (Iberis sempervirens)
- honeysuckle shrub (Lonerica tatarica)
- daisy (Bellis perennis)

Although these are cultivars, there are close relatives in our area and in other BC regions. The only purely native species is wild blue flax. It is a perennial which can be found in low and mid elevations in the grasslands, open forests, and hillsides of our area, with its main blooming period in May and June.
