Mezereum in Peterson Creek
Daphne mezereon is also called February Daphne, Mezereum, spurge laurel, and spurge olive. It is an introduced plant of the Thymelaeaceae family.
The deciduous shrub grows to about 1.5m. Scented pink flowers appear in early spring before the leaves emerge. Red berries form in summer. All parts of the plant are toxic. It is considered to be an invasive species in BC, but it would have less impact in the cold-winter areas of the Interior.
Four shrubs were found in a gully on the west side of Peterson Creek. A number of photos were taken by author, shared here. Click an image for a lightbox view.
