Lac le Jeune Lookout Hike
We hiked from Lac le Jeune into the hills on our way to a Lookout on top of a hill. Along the way we enjoyed wildflowers, birds, and insects. By the lake and in wet zones angelica (Angelica arguta) with its large compound white flowers grew on the ends of tall stalks.
On the top area of the south-facing lookout were many buckwheat (Erigonium sp.) in bloom, this one with a yellow velvet beetle at work.
Nearby was sulphur buckwheat (Erigonium umbellatum), with reddish colors emerging as the flowers age.
We hiked down through the forest and a cutblock. Arnica and oxeye daisies were abundant in open areas.
Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis) flowers were aging and berries will develop. A crab spider was waiting patiently on a petal.
On the open double tracks were some small-flowered penstemons (Penstemon procerus) were in flower.
There were many butterflies active, including this Western White Admiral (Limenitis arthemis ssp. rubrofasciata).
Agoseris were also spotted along the lakeshore.
After hiking, I paddled the lake, exploring the marshlands at the east end of the lake. Marsh cinquefoil (Potentilla palustris) had just started to flower.
A Wildflower Journal is just that, a frequent journal of sightings saved as photographs. Some light research follows and a post is drafted. No attempt at fulsom botanical information is attempted for these field trip posts, though some more specific wildflower posts are also provided, mostly over the winter.
