High Above Pass Lake
We hiked through the forest starting at 1224m (4015 feet) and we made our way up to a viewpoint at 1334 m (4374 feet) on a stormy day. A few photos were taken, but the grey light, dark skies and rain made this difficult.
On a steep slope kinnikinnick (arctostaphylos uva-ursi) was in bloom with small urn-like pink flowers.
On top of the upper plateau were some patches of fairyslippers (calypso orchids) in bloom.
We spotted three of these and we think they are probably coralroot orchids (corallorhiza sp.).
We skirted a high marsh and Labrador tea (ledum groenlandicum) was regenerating along the shoreline.
On the drier, open ridge were a few thread-leaved sandwort (arenaria capillaris) showing off white, delicate flowers at the end of longer stems.
As soon as we got back to our trucks, the rain started. We felt lucky to explore the upper hills that day (without getting soaked).
