Flowers of the Spring Gardens
By May, the fruit trees (apple, pear, cherry, and plum) are in blossom and a number of shrubs (broom, Oregon grape, daphne, hyacinth, and almond) are showing their two week flowering show. Click an image for a larger lightbox view and a caption.
A succession of perennials in the borders, rockeries, and flower beds are also in flower at this time. The stars include cerastium, veronica, forget-me-nots, phlox, candytuft, saxifrage, strawberries, and creeping speedwell.
Other flowers are just past or just emerging like sweet alyssum, veronica, lamium, ajuga, burro’s tail, grape hyacinth, and many others.
Although these plants are cultivars, many were grown from seed or divisions, some were volunteers, wild but kept, and some have been with us for 40+ years. About once a month, we will feature more flowers in the borders, rockeries, and beds which we tend every day.
