Early Hiking in the Hills
With the snow melting, i climbed into the hills to frozen waterfalls and onto open ridges for the view. Along the way, I stopped to take photos of anything that interested me.
By the frozen waterfall the cliffs rose above where I was standing. About 2 metres up was a ledge with some sparse grasses growing on the gravelly surface. Hanging down were roots, following the seep. They were crusted with mineral salts.
On a large rock was a patterned boulder lichen (possibly porpidia crustulata).
.
Some orangish polypores (Gloeophyllum sepiarium) were multiplying on fallen trees.
Twisted grained rootstocks with some wolf lichen were spotted on a hillside.
In rocky areas, mosses grew on or between boulders. Star mosses filled in the spots among cushion mosses.
Cladonia could be spotted on north-facing slopes
On open ridges a few shaped trees stood into the wind.
Soon we will see the emergence of herb growth and a few early wildflowers. Spring is close.
I really enjoyed and appreciated this blog. Also, I really took a ‘lichen’ to it!🌳♻🐦🍄
