Backpacking in Grand Canyon (Wildflowers)
In April a few years back, I backpacked through the Grand Canyon for 4 days. On the first day, I started the hike at 6700 feet and hiked down into the canyon, camping at 2800 feet. The varieties of flowering plants varied with each drop in elevation. Captions are provided for each photo. Click any photo for a close-up view.
On the second and third day, I hiked down to the Colorado River and across the benchland on the Tonto Trail.
I was lucky to spot many cacti in bloom along the route.
On the fourth day I continued my hike back up to the Rim. I stayed in the area for 3 more days of hiking in Grand Canyon National Park.
Hi Doug,
Thank you for the beautiful photos of the flowers found in and around the Canyon! I spent close to ten years in the area as a teen and young woman. My brother lived on the road between Flag and the Park gates and operated a cafe there from the late 50s to the early 80s. Your vivid pictures brought back sweet memories of our many hikes and the beautiful flowers we encountered along the way.
I found your site looking for photos of Moneses uniflora, i.e. ‘Single Delight’, a wildflower I’ve seen but once, 48 years ago this past May, a few hundred yards from Cat Creek in Kananaskis Park, near the Sheep River. I’d dearly love to see one again, but those woods were still primal in those days and now they are overrun. I doubt I shall ever have the privilege. But your photos are *spectacular*.
Thank you!
