Along the Struthers Creek Corridor
I ventured out to paddle Badger Lake via the Knouff Lake Road, but on the way back I took the Orchard Lake Road, following Struthers Creek down the slope.
Near Badger Lake in wet gullies cow parsnip (heracleum lanatum) was in flower. The umbellate shape is more obvious in profile. Also nicknamed “Indian celery” or “Indian rhubarb”, it is a large plant in the carrot family.
Near Coyote Lake I was pleased to find this seldom-seen purple wild geranium. Its a bit of an anomaly to find it in the area.
We have seen striped coralroot (corallorhiza striata) more often in this wet spring-summer. They get their nutrients from decaying organic matter and do not produce chlorophyll.
Nodding onion (allium cernuum) flowers were just emerging in various open spots.
In many spots, low-grawing harebells (campanula rotundifolia) graced the hillsides in the forest.
We stopped in to see Struthers Falls on our way down the hill.
We sometimes find something new, and this purple wild geranium was a surprise and a bit of a mystery to us. Any thoughts on this flower would be appreciated.
