A Nature Hike on the Barnes Trails
On a mid-April day we hiked a 9.6 km route on the Barnes Lake Trails in Barnhartvale. The routes are horse-and-hiker trails through grasslands slopes, ponderosa pine open forests, and douglas fir forests on glaciated terrain. Although we were hiking at a good pace, I stopped briefly to observe and photograph a few wildflowers. Shared here are heart-leaved arnica (Arnica cordifolia), low pussytoes (Antennaria dimorpha), small-flowered woodland star (Lithophragma parviflorum), woolypod milkvetch (Astralagus purshii), few-flowered shooting stars (Dodacatheon pulchellum sp.), and arrow-leaved balsamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata). We also spotted other wildflowers, noted in earlier posts, or were just emerging (sagebrush buttercups, blue-eyed Mary, bur-buttercup, large fruited desert-parsley, upland larkspur, and others). More information on some of these can be found on pages through the Wildflowers page.
